Fire Department

Fire service is provided by the South Boston Fire Department who is assisted by the South Boston Volunteer Fire Company.

Fire Protection for the community is structured around five major departmental components:

• suppression,
• prevention,
• emergency medical service,
• training and maintenance of vehicles, equipment and facilities.

Fire suppression provides for the extinguishment of fires and the performance of related duties once a fire occurs.

Fire prevention duties consist of inspections, prevention, and public education in an effort to reduce the number of uncontrolled fires. We have eight employees and forty volunteers.

Emergency medical services are provided by 18 First Responders who ensure the community of prompt and professional emergency medical care.
Visit the South Boston Volunteer Fire Company Web site.

South Boston's First Fire Truck
The Fire Department was started in 1884.
About 1920 the town purchased its first real fire engine, an American-LaFrance, which was used for many years.
