Senior Exercise Group
The Senior Exercise Group (SEG) was formed in 1998 by three female citizens: Rose Hawkins, Vivian Clark and Juanita Cross whose desire was to have a place to exercise in a controlled environment. The South Boston Recreation Center (The Old Armory) was offered to them initially on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 7 am - 11 am. South Boston Rec. employee Frances Mitchell was assigned the job of opening for the group and taking care of their needs. The group started slow, but began to gain popularity rapidly over the next year, growing to over 100 registered members including several men, and then reaching over 200 after the 2nd year with Vivian Clark and Frances Mitchell working closely together as leader of the group. Senior Exercise Group over the years has established itself as a Community Help Group, as Well as an exercise group, donating funds to Halifax Cancer Association, The Red Cross, College Scholarships, Athletic Programs, and other worthy projects that are in need. The group also raises funds internally for their annual Christmas Party and their annual spring picnic. All funding comes from a 25 cents voluntarily donated each visit from its members, everybody doing a little bit, so nobody has to do a lot. The group acquired the nickname ‘The Hug Bunch’ early on because of the warm greetings given to every member as they came in, that included a hug. The group is very close knit and care about each other deeply. The SEG just celebrated its Twenty year Anniversary recently, and after twenty years they are still as loving and charitable as ever. The South Boston Recreation Department is so thankful that this group was birthed within our doors where they have called home for the last twenty years.
