Spring Classic Youth Basketball Tournament
March 6th, 7th and 8th. Invitational tournament for South Boston, Halifax, and surrounding counties. Tourney will be a double elimination for youths ages 7-12. Trophies will be awarded for the top three finishers in each division. Entry fee will be $100 per team
Senior Exercise Group Cruise-In
April 18th. Members of the senior exercise group will have their prized vehicles(cars, trucks, motorcycles...) on display from 2pm-5pm at the South Boston Recreation center. Anyone that is not a member but would like to participate is welcome to do so.
Ladies Walk Fit Class
Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 5pm-6:00pm. You are invited to burn some calories and lose some weight while walking at the Washington Coleman Community Center.
Volleyball Gym Rental
Any group wishing to rent the gym for the purpose of playing volleyball can do so at the rate of $60 for the first hour and $30 each additional hour. . Call 434-575-4230 to check availability.
North Main Classic Basketball Tournament
Saturday May 9th. Sign-ups for boys and girls ages 12-18 will be held April 1st - April 30th. All games will be played at the North Main Street Playground(weather permitting). There will be a $1 admission for participants and spectators. Any coaches, vendors, or volunteers interested in being a part should contact the Recreation Department at 434-575-4230.
Senior Exercise Group Walk For Hope
June 6th. The South Boston Recreation Department Senior Exercise Group invites you to walk for hope. The walk will take place at the Halifax County Senior High bus parking lot. The walk will begin at 7a.m. All proceeds will go to the Halifax County Cancer Association. Sponsor envelopes can be picked up at the recreation department.

Disc Golf(Frisbee Golf)
Disc golf is readily available within Halifax County. The course sits within the confines of Edmunds Park which is managed by the Halifax County Recreation Department. For more information contact William(Bill) Shortt at 434-476-3332.
July 11th thru July 15th. The camp will be held on the lawn of the recreation department from 9am-12noon. Camp instructors Mary Douglas, Karen Taylor and Frances Mitchell will teach all the fundamentals of bow shooting. All equipment will be provided. People of all ages are invited to attend. Awards given for best team and individual performances.
Substance Abuse Prevention Basketball Tournament
July 29th thru July 31st. This tournament is sponsored by the Mental Health Of America. The tournament is open to girls and boys ages 13-15. Games will be played at the South Boston Recreation Department. There will be a mandatory meeting Friday July 24th at 6pm(@WCCC) for anyone that wishes to be eligible for the tournament. A guest speaker for the event will be announced at a later date. This event will be hosted by the South Boston and the Halifax County Recreation Departments. Senior Exercise Group
A year round event that meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7am-11am at the South Boston Recreaction Center. Participants are able to walk laps around the gym floor where the surface is flat and there is no need to be concerned with weather. The walking facility is both heated and air conditioned. There are treadmills, weights, and various other pieces of cardio equipment to help keep the body in good condition. Also, there are pool table, ping pong tables, cornholes, and forms of entertainment to help keep you fit. There is no cost to attend so come out, work out, or just socialize.
Movie Night (SUMMER)
Starts Thursday June 11th at 7pm. Free popcorn and drinks will be served. We will be showing G & PG rated movies.
Mites(5-8years)PeeWee(9-11years) Sign-ups begin June 1st and end July 15th. Five year olds must have a consent form before they will be allowed to play. Both leagues Sart in August and lasts until November. Games are conducted by the Halifax County and South Boston Recreation Departmetns. Games will be played at the Mary Bethune Complex.
Industrial League Basketball
The organizational meeting for this league will be August 4th at 6:30pm at Washington Coleman Community Center in the Library. This league is open to any business or industry that have full time employees that work together and receive a paycheck and a pay stub from the same employer. The season will begin play the 3rd Sunday in October.
Thirty & Over Basketball
Organizational meeting for this league will be August 4th at 6:30pm. The meeting will take place at Washington Coleman Community Center. This league will be played in conjunction with the business and industrial leagues. Everyone interested in registering a team in this league should attend this meeting. All participants must be current residents of Halifax County and be at least 30 years of age(age as of October 1st 2016).
Youth Basketball Sign-Ups
These sign-ups are for the mites(5-7), peewee(8-10), midget(11-12), junior teens(13-14) and senior teens(15-18). League age will be your age as of September 30th, 2016. Sign-up dates are October 17th, 19th, 24th & 26th from 5pm to 7pm and October 22nd and 29th from 9am-12noon. Registration is free during the scheduled dates. There will be a $25 late sign-up fee.
The South Boston Recreation Department provides four well manicured community parks; three of which have picnic shelters that can be reserved for $25 for a four hour period. The parks are located on North Main, Grove Avenue, Penick Avenue and Vaughan Street. Reservations can be made by calling 434-446-1802
Washington Coleman Community Center
Located at 1927 Jeffress Boulevard. This facility offers a 19 station fitness area, large multi-purpose room with warming kitchen, library, conference room, senior lounge, recording studio, child activity room, and many other recreational opportunities. The Tobacco Heritage Trail
The off-road trail, which will primarily utilize abandoned railroad corridors, will be limited to non-motorized traffic and will be for multiple user groups. The trail is open to pedestrians, hikers, cyclist, and horseback riders with portions accesible to those with mobility limitations.
