Women’s Group Dance
Starts April 2nd. This event will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from5p.m. - 6:30p.m. You are invited to come out to burn some calories and lose some weight while dancing to some of your favorite songs.
Volleyball Gym Rental
Any group wishing to rent the gym for the purpose of playing volleyball can do so at a rate of $60 per hour. Call 434-575-4230 to see what times are available.
North Main Classic
Basketball Tournament
tournament date is May 18th. Sign-ups will be help April 1st - 29th. This annual tournament is for boys and girls 12-18. All games will be played at the North Main Street Playground(weather permitting). There will be a $1.00 admission for participants and spectators. Any coaches, vendors, sponsors, or volunteers interested in being a part should contact the recreation department at 434-575-4230.
Senior Exercise Group Sunrise
Walk For Hope
Saturday June8th. The South Boston Recreation Department/Senior Exercise Group invites you to walk for hop. The walk will take place at the Halifax County Senior High School bus parking lot. The walk will begin at 7a.m. All proceeds will go to the Halifax County Cancer Association. Sponsors envelopes can be picked up at the recreation department.
New Covenant Christian Church
Basketball Camp
June 10th - 12th. This camp will take place from 1p.m.-3p.m. This is a camp for children 7-10 years of age. It will focus on the fundamentals of basketball and teaching kids to have fun. Contact the recreation department at 434-575-4230 to pre-register.
Open Gym
June 1st - August 10th .
Mondays 7pm - 9pm 40&over
Wednesdays 3:30pm - 5pm 11-13 year olds
Wednesdays 5pm - 7pm14-16 year olds
Thursdays 10am - 12noon girls
Sundays 7pm - 9pm 17 and over
Co-ed Kickball Game
Saturday June 8th. This game will be for ages 15 and over. The game will be played at a site to be determined later. If the kid inside you is itching to get out contact the recreation department at 434-575- 4230 to pre-register.
Disc Golf Class(Frisbee golf )
Saturday June 22nd.This is an open class to anyone interested in learning the game of disc golf. The class will be taught by William “Bill” Shortt. The class is being sponsored by Halifax County/South Boston Recreation Departments. The class is free and all needed equipment will be provided. The class will take place at Edmunds Park from 1pm -4pm. Call 434-575-4230 or 434-476-3332 to register.
Archery Camp
July 8th - 12th. 9am- 12noon. This camp will be held on the front lawn of the recreation department. The camp, instructed by Mary Douglas and Francis Mitchell, will teach all the fundamentals of bow shooting. All equipment will be provided and people of all ages are invited to attend. Prizes will be awarded at the end of camp for top performers.
Substance Abuse Prevention
Basketball Tourney
July 26th - 28th. This tournament, sponsored by Mental Health Of America, is for girls and boys ages 13 - 15. The games will be played at the South Boston Recreation Department. There will be a MANDATORY meeting Friday July 26th at 6pm for anyone hoping to be eligible for the tournament. There will be a guest speaker to be announced at a later date. This event is hosted by both the South Boston and Halifax County recreation Departments. Call 575-4230 or 476-3332 for more information.
Introduction To Badminton
August 12th - 14th. 6pm - 8pm. This class is for anyone interested in learning the rules, regulations, and techniques of badminton. The class will be held on the front lawn of the recreation department and will be instructed by Mary Douglas.
Sunday Family Fun Day
August 18th(weather permitting). 4pm - 9pm. This event will be held at Constitution Square. It will be a fun filled day of gospel music, games, food, and exhibits. Anyone interested in being a part of the entertainment should contact the recreation department at 575-4230.
Senior Exercise Group
A year round event that meets every Monday, Wednesday, And Friday from 6am - 11am at the South Boston Recreation Center. Participants are able to walk laps around the gym floor where the surface is flat and there is no need to be concerned with the weather. The walking facility is both heated and air conditioned. There are treadmills, weights, and various other pieces of cardio equipment to help keep the body in good condition. Also, there pool tables, ping pong tables, corn holes and other entertaining games to help you wind down. There is no cost to attend so come work out or just socialize.
Arts And Crafts Class
July and August. This class is for children ages 7 - 10. The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm - 3:30pm at the Washington Coleman Community Center. Contact the recreation department at 575-4230 for more details.
Talent Show
Friday Night Lights
August 30th. This event will take place at the Washington Coleman Community Center. The show will be open to all ages and talents. Performances must be clean and viewable by all audiences . Prizes will be awarded to top performers. All participants must audition before August 30th. Call 575-4230 for more information.
Youth Football
ages 5-8 (mites) ages 9-11 (peewee). Sign-ups begin in June and end July 13th. (5) year olds must have a consent form before they will be allowed to play. Both leagues start in August and run through November. Games are conducted by the Halifax and South Boston recreation departments and will be played at the Mary Bethune Complex.
Industrial League Basketball
The organizational meeting for this league will be August 15th 2013 at 7pm. The meeting will be at The Town Council Chambers. This league is open to all businesses or industries that have full time employees that work together and receive a paycheck and pay stub from the same employer. The season will begin the 3rd Sunday in October.
Youth Basketball Sign-ups
These sign-ups are for the mites(5-7), peewee(8-10), midget(11&12), junior teen(13&14), and senior teen(15-18)leagues. League age will be your age as of September 30th. Sign up dates will be October 21st, 23rd, 28th, and 30th from 5-7pm and October 26th and November 2nd from 9am - 12noon. Games will begin in early December.
Community Parks
The South Boston Recreation Department provides four well manicured community parks, three that have picnic shelters that can be reserved for $25 per 4 hour time period. The parks are located on Main Street, Grove Avenue, Penick Avenue and Vaughan Street. Reservations can be made by calling 575-4230.
The Tobacco Heritage Trail
An off-road trail, which will primarily utilize abandoned railroad corridors, will be limited to non-motorized traffic and will be for multiple user groups - pedestrians, hikers, bicyclists, and horseback - with portions accessible to those with mobility limitations.
