South Boston Recreation Poetry Challenge

 South Boston Recreation Dept. Poetry Challenge will be held June 23, 2020 at Washington Coleman Community Center at 6:00PM. There will be three levels to this challenge. Open to all ages, children and adults.

Level #1 - Reading of favorite published poem.
Level #2 - Recital of famous published poem.
Level #3 - Reading of participants' own poem.

Levels #1 and #2 must be a different poem.
The winner of each level will receive a $50.00 cash prize.
There will be judges to determine winner of each level.

 No profanity, political agendas, or belittling of others.
Start writing or rehearsing your favorite poem today.

Coloring Contest

The South Boston Recreation Center is due for a paint job. Enter this coloring contest and share your fresh ideas and looks. Use markers, colored pencils, or crayons. Show off your skills for a chance to win. There are 5 age divisions. Awards will be given to the top winner in each division.

1 - ages Pre-K thru 6
2 - ages 7 – 9
3 -  ages 10 – 13
4 - ages 14 – 17

 To enter the contest pick up and return a coloring sheet from the South Boston Recreation Center on 1620 Jeffress Blvd, South Boston, VA. Coloring sheets can also be downloaded by clicking here.

Frances J. Mitchell Walk for Hope 


The Frances J. Mitchell Walk for Hope formally the Senior Exercise Group Walk for Hope walk date has been set for Saturday, August 1, 2020. The South Boston Recreation Department Senior Exercise Group invites you to WALK FOR HOPE in memory of Ms. Mitchell who was a long time employee and leader of the Senior Exercise Group at the recreation center. She lost her battle to cancer in 2019.
The walk will take place 7:00 AM at the Halifax County High School bus parking lot.  All proceeds will go to the Halifax County Cancer Association.  Sponsors envelopes can be picked up at the Recreation Center, or the Washington Coleman Community Center.
