2009 Spring/Summer Activities
Spring Classic Basketball Youth Tournament
Invitational tournament for South
Boston, Halifax, and surrounding
counties youth ages 7-12. Tourney will
be double elimination with trophies for
the top three fmishers in each divi-
sion. Tournament will be March 6-8
and the entry fee will be $85.00 per
team.
Senior Exercise Group Fashion Show & Awards Banquet
April 25th at 6:00 p.m. This event will
be held at the Washington Coleman
Community Center. Participants from
the group will take part in the fashion
show. Awards will be presented for
miles walked, free throw shooting,
putt putt golf, and a few specialty
awards also. Dinner will be catered by
Four Oaks Restarurant. Tickets will be
$12.00 per person.
North Main Classic Basketball Tournament
Annual tournament for boys and girls
ages 12-18. All games will be played at
the North Main Street Playground.
Sign-ups will be held April 17th-30th.
Tournament date is May 9th. There is
no cost for this event. Any vendors,
coaches, sponsors, or volunteers
interested in taking part should
contact the recreation department at
572-4230 for more information.
Movie Night
Starting in June - re-runs of old
movies will be shown on a big screen
television every 1st and 3rd Friday of
the month. The movies will be shown
at the Washington Coleman
Community Center. Movie night is for
children 7-10 years of age and their
parents. Start time will be 7:30 p.m.
each night with free refreshments
being served.
Senior Exercise Group Sunrise Walk For Hope
The South Boston Recreation
Department/Senior Exercise Group
invites you to walk for hope Sunday
June 7th, 2009. The walk will be at
the Halifax County Senior High School
bus parking lot. Start time will be 7
a.m. Proceeds will benefit the Halifax
County Cancer Association. Sponsor
envelopes can be picked up at the
Sount Boston Recreation Department.
New Covenant Christian Church Basketball Camp
A basketball camp for children ages
7-10 sponsored by New Covenant
Church. Focus will be on the
fundamentals of basketball. This will
take place June 16th-18th from 1-3p.m.
Drum Camp
Washington Coleman Community
Center will have drum lessons for
beginners. The lessons will be June
15th-18th for those that pre-register
by calling the rec. dept. at 575-4230.
The call will be conducted by Mr.
Johnny Davis. There is no cost and no
equipment is needed.
Open Gym (starting in June)
Mon: 7 - 9 p.m. 40 & Over
Wed: 3:30 - 5 p.m., 12-14 yr. olds, 5-7 p.m., 15-19 yr. olds
Thurs: 10 a.m.- 12 noon Girls
Sunday: 7 - 9 p.m. 17 & Over
Arts & Crafts Class
Classes will be held at the
Washington Coleman Community
Center. The classes will focus on
recycled art: making art from
recycable materials. Participants must
pre-register by calling the rec. dept. at
575-4230. dates for this event (TBA).
Archery Camp
This camp will teach bracing of the
bow, shooting, scoring and
equipment management. Instructors
will be Mary Douglas and Frances
Mitchell. There will be awards given
for top performers. There is no cost for
this event and no equipment is
needed. The public is invited to attend. July 6th - 10th 9 a.m.- 12noon.
Volleyball Camp
Great opportunity for the beginner
players to work on their skills. Girls
ages 9-13. Camp will be July 13th - 17th from 1 - 3 p.m.
Substance Abuse Prevention Basketball Tourney
A basketball tourney sponsored by Mental Health of America for males 13-15 years of age. All participants
must attend the Friday night session and listen to the guest speaker to be
eligible for play. Team assignment and
jersey distribution will also take place at the Friday night session. Games will be played at the South Boston
Recreation Department and the event will be supervised by both the Halifax
Recreation and South Boston
Recreation Departments. The
tournament will take place July 24th - 26th.
Sunday Family Fun Day
A fun-filled day of gospel music, food,
games, and exhibits. This event was
designed to be a last hoorah before the
start of school. This event will take
place August 16th from 4-9 p.m. at
Constitution Square. Anyone
interested in being a part of the
entertainment for this day should
contact the recreation department at
575-4230.
Frisbee Golf Class
This class is open to anyone interested
in learning to play the game of Frisbee
Golf. The class will be taught by Will-
iam "Bill" Shortt and sponsored by the
Halifax County/South Boston
Recreation Departments. There is no
cost and no equipment needed for this
class. The class will be held at
Edmunds Park June 27th from 1-4p.m.

Senior exercise Group
A year round event that meets every
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from
6a.m.-11a.m. Participants are able to
walk laps around the gym floor where
the surface is flat and there is no need
to be concerned with the weather. The
walking facility is both heated and air
conditioned. There are treadmills,
weights, and various other pieces of
equipment to aid in keeping the body
in peak physical condition. There is no
cost so it's a great opportunity to
exercise and socialize.
Youth Football
Ages 5-11, Two age divisions Mites 6-
8, and Pee Wees 9-11. Sign-ups begin
in June, and end July 17th. Both
Leagues start in August and run
through November. Youth football
games are conducted by the Halifax
and South Boston Recreation Dept. All
games are held at the Mary Bethune

Industrial Basketball
Organizational Meeting August 20, 2009
7p.m. at the Town Council Chambers.
This league is open to all businesses
or industries who's employees work
together and receive a check from the
same employer. All participants must
be full time employees with taxes
being deducted. Season begins 3rd
Sunday in October.
Youth Basketball
League sign-ups October 19th, 21st,
26th & 28th, 5-7p.m. Oct. 24th & 31st
9a.m.-12noon. ages 5-17. These are
the leagues that will be offered mites
5-7, Pee Wee 8-10, Midget 1 1&12, Jr.
Teens 13 & 14, Senior Teens 15-17.
Month of November will be used for
practice time for these leagues, and
play will begin December. Call
575-4230 for more info.
Community Parks
South Boston Recreation Department
provides four well manicured
community parks; three of which have
picnic shelters that can be reserved for
$25 for a four hour slot. The parks are
located on Main Street, Grove Avenue,
Penick Avenue, and Vaughan Street.
